GEORGIA E-VERIFY LEGISLATION GUIDE

Status: SB 529 signed into law April 17, 2006; HB 87 signed into law May 13, 2011.
Impact:Georgia has two E-Verify bills.
- SB 529, signed in 2006 and effective July 1, 2007, requires public employers and any contractors and subcontractors to a public employer use E-Verify. Employers with 500+ employees had to register by July 1, 2007, those with 100+ by July 1, 2008, and all public employers had to register by July 1, 2009.
- HB 87, passed in 2011, requires E-Verify for all Georgia employers with more than 10 employees. The bill takes effect in three stages:
- Effective Jan. 1, 2012, employers with more than 500 employees are required to use E-Verify
- Effective July 1, 2012, employers with 100 or more employees are required to use E-Verify
- By July 1, 2013, employers with more than 10 employees must use the E-Verify program.
